Pune: The family of 23-year-old Anuj Bidve, who was shot dead in Manchester early on Monday, has sought External Affairs Minister S M Krishna's help in getting his body back to Pune. His father and cousin have applied for an emergency visa to speed up the process after being advised to do so by the Consulate General of India in Birmingham.
The police, who have arrested five persons in connection with the murder, yesterday said that they were treating it as a hate crime. Bidve, a student of Microelectronics at Lancaster University, was shot in the head at close range in an "unprovoked" attack.
In an open letter to Mr Krishna, his family expressed concern over the delay in getting his body because of Christmas and New Year holidays in the UK.
"We been told that we are also required to be present in the United Kingdom to complete the procedures for handing over Anuj's body," his brother-in-law Rakesh Sonawane told reporters here. "Anuj's father Subhash Bidve and I would go to Manchester once we get the visa," Anuj's cousin Suruchi Wagh said.
Bidwe was visiting Manchester along with eight other friends during the Christmas break. They were walking from their hotel in Salford towards Manchester city centre when two men came up to them. One of them took out a gun and shot Bidve after a brief conversation, the police have said.
Messages expressing grief continued to pour in on Facebook. One said, "Can't believe that someone so full of life had his life ruthlessly taken away from him for no mistake of his own ... rest in peace."
